The Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio burns in 1969. Public outcry over this incident went a long way to convincing Congress to pass the CWA.

The Cuyahoga River outside of Cleveland, Ohio catches fire, sparking water pollution control activities. This was the 13th time the river had caught fire since 1868.
